Current emergency situation

It has been hard not to learn of the terrible atrocities occurring in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The fighting between insurgent General Laurent Nkunda and the Congolese army in North Kivu has led to an unfolding humanitarian tragedy. Whilst Children in Crisis strongly condemns this violence, we are not an emergency organisation and therefore are not playing a part of the relief effort in the North.

We would like to reassure our supporters that Children in Crisis’ education work is taking place in the mid and high plateau of South Kivu, three to four days walk (or ten hours drive) away from the location of the unrest. Concerns have been expressed in media reports and political coverage that unless resolved, fighting in North Kivu could re-ignite a wider conflict across the region. The situation in Eastern DRC is undoubtedly fragile. Thankfully, at the time of writing communities in the region of South Kivu, with whom Children in Crisis and our local partners work, have not been affected. Our team of local teacher trainers have just spent the last month in project locations on the High Plateau and have reported that the situation there is calm.

We continue to hope that the violence will not spread to South Kivu and will be following the situation closely. We act on local advice at all times and will keep our website updated with any developments.
